In the latest episode of the Hilliard Beacon Audio Companion, hosts Jordan Smith, kevin Corvo and Tim Hofmann bring us an inspiring conversation with three recipients of the prestigious Lashutka Award, celebrating their contributions and resilience ahead of the Nationwide Children’s Columbus Marathon and Half Marathon.
Heidi Baxter, known for her unique blend of support as both a marathon volunteer and donor, shared her journey of establishing a cherished orange stand at mile 23 of the marathon—a critical point where runners often need an extra boost. What started as a small act of encouragement has grown into a beloved tradition. Heidi also opened up about her life of service, including her recent living organ donation to a fellow Columbus Crew fan, a remarkable testament to her commitment to helping others.
Kris Pierson and Mike Ray, both marathoners themselves, talked about their respective battles with physical and health challenges. Kris, after a devastating bike accident just weeks before the previous marathon, recounted his long road to recovery, culminating in his triumphant return to running. Mike, undergoing chemotherapy for stage four colon cancer, emphasized the mental and physical commitment running requires of him - even in the days leading up to the race.
Both men shared how running has been a cornerstone in their healing processes, with Mike describing it as a way to reclaim normalcy in his life, despite the obstacles.
The conversation highlighted not just the physical endurance required for marathon running, but the emotional and mental strength these athletes have drawn on to continue their journey. Each guest exemplified the power of their support systems, their determination, and the human spirit we all share, hopefully inspiring listeners across Hilliard on cold mornings and rough days where “one more mile,” seems pretty far away.
As the marathon approaches on October 20th, the Hilliard Beacon encourages everyone to cheer on these incredible individuals and support their continued efforts, not only on race day but in all aspects of their lives. Stay tuned for more updates as the Beacon follows their progress and celebrates their achievements.
