Students in Hilliard City Schools who are in need of winter clothing will have it thanks to support from Hilliard residents and businesses, and the coordinated effort of the Hilliard Division of Police and the city’s recreation and parks department.
A caravan of police cars and officers delivered hundreds of coats, gloves, hats, scarves, boots and other winter-weather gear Dec. 8 to Avery Elementary School where students unloaded the boxes from the cruisers.
The delivery of coats and winter-weather clothing will be distributed from there and made available to students at school buildings throughout the district.
This is the fifth season the Hilliard Division of Police, with support from the community, has used its “Cram the Cruiser” program to collect and deliver winter-weather clothing for students in Hilliard schools.
“This campaign is exactly what the holiday season is about. We take a lot of pride in knowing our community pulls together to support others and we are honored to help the cause,” said Andrea Litchfield, community relations administrator for the Hilliard Division of Police.
So many items were donated that only a fraction was delivered to Avery Elementary, to allow students an opportunity to share in the event.
About 30 additional lawn-sized bags of clothing was dropped off at the district’s central administrative offices where building principals from specific schools can “shop” for what students at their schools need.
In addition to clothing, the Cram the Cruiser event took in about 300 pounds of food items and almost 500 pounds of personal care items such as shampoo and toilet paper that were provided to the Hilliard Food Pantry.
The Cram the Cruiser event is sponsored by Amazon Web Services, Credit Union of Ohio, Ease Logistics, Hillgarten, Mayco Colors, Massey’s Pizza, and Painter and Associates.
