Melissa Swearingen Started in Hilliard, Built Her Career and Returns for New Challenges
Hilliard City Schools Treasurer Melissa Swearingen is to start her first official day on the job Oct. 14 after having served in a consulting role since Sept. 8.
Swearingen, a Hilliard resident, said she is “excited” to return to the district where she once served for nine years as the district’s assistant treasurer.
“I am very excited to be coming back to Hilliard City Schools,” said Swearingen, who departed her post as treasurer and chief financial officer of the Delaware City School District to accept the job as treasurer of Hilliard schools.

“In my time in Delaware, I have gained the knowledge and experience that allows me to come back in this capacity. I have lived in Hilliard for 19 years, so the opportunity to serve the district in this role is something I have always hoped for,” Swearingen said.
Hilliard Board of Education members hired Swearingen at its Sept. 7 board meeting.
Swearingen departed her post as Hilliard’s assistant treasurer in 2013 to take the job in Delaware.
“Her extensive experience and dedication to financial stewardship make her an excellent addition to our team. We believe her expertise will contribute significantly to our ongoing efforts in providing the best educational resources for our students,” Beth Murdoch - President Hilliard BOE
Prior to the hire of Swearingen, Anita Dalluge was the district’s interim treasurer.
Dalluge was named interim treasurer upon the resignation of Brian Wilson, effective Aug. 11.
Wilson had served as Hilliard’s treasurer since 2005.
Wilson took a job as treasurer of the Hamilton Local School District.
“I was ready for a smaller district with less stress (but) the hardest part was leaving my co-workers. I know with the current administrative team, the district will keep moving forward,” Wilson said.
Swearingen has a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Ohio State University and a master of business administration, fraud concentration, from Otterbein University.
As treasurer for the Delaware City Schools, Swearingen received the Auditor of State Award with Distinction for the past two years and she is a past president of the Ohio Association of School Business Officials.
