It’s 2023 and unfortunately we have to ask if you know where your local news is…
The closure of our community newspaper is a loss to Hilliard. The paper, its editors and reporter Kevin Corvo have been valuable partners to the city over the years while also serving the crucial mission of being the Fourth Estate ‒ that important part of the checks and balances for government.
We wish all the best to those at ThisWeek. You will be missed by those you have served.
--David Ball, Community Relations Director, City of Hilliard.

1. Why this, why now
While we applaud the city’s commitment to transparency and their willingness to commit resources towards new tools and information sharing it is clear to us that the outside perspective - the public interest - needs *more* local power and voice. To that end, Franklin Street Creative and Kevin Corvo are launching The Hilliard Beacon as a Substack newsletter and subscription service.
2. What you can expect from us
The Hilliard Beacon will publish weekly, focused on:
Hilliard City Council - Commissions - Boards
Hilliard Board of Education
Franklin County and Hilliard as Central Ohio Community Members
3. The Weekly Beat
In addition to weekly print reporting and features we expect to produce a weekly audio companion to each piece. These podcasts will feature related interviews and contextual analysis. Other projects within the Substack will follow as your interest and our time allow.
As your neighbors, our only goal is to keep Hilliard informed and develop a reliable source of steady information and reporting for you - our community. As we work hard to develop and understand this new outlet we promise to stick to that mission alone. Your support is critical. You are our only boss!
If you’d like to get involved, please reach out to us at franklinstreetcreative@gmail.com
or join us right here on Substack now!
Who we are:
Franklin Street Creative is a neighborhood non-profit founded by locally focused friends and business partners. One of our core commitments is to support local creatives and entrepreneurs who are ready to take the next step in leveling-up and serving the needs of our community.
Kevin Corvo began covering the City of Hilliard in 1999, for the Hilliard Northwest News, one of more than 20 weekly newspapers under the banner of Suburban News Publications. After various mergers; the Hilliard school district along with city council, boards, commissions and commercial development policy, has been his primary beat for over a decade.
